Seaside Homestead was painted at the height of Gay’s career, and his adaptation of the Barbizon style is evident here in the raw, moody aesthetic. There is both frankness and poetry here; Gay sought to capture the terrestrial more than the transcendental, as his contemporaries in the Hudson River School did. In both his life and his art, he was adventurous and ahead of his time.
